The Peter P. Mercer Learning Commons at Ramapo College of New Jersey combines an array of resources for campus-wide use, including state-of-the-art classrooms, media rooms, on-site technology resources, and more. Replacing the original George T. Potter library, the project establishes a vibrant new learning environment while increasing overall interior space from 60,000 to 80,000 square feet.
Ramapo College wanted to create a vibrant new Learning Commons with an emphasis on technology resources, access to special collections and other user services, and an expanded array of study and learning environments. Although the physical collection would remain an important element of the Peter P. Mercer Learning Commons, it no longer needed to be the dominant design and programming consideration. By using a hybridized arrangement of standard and compact shelving and reducing reference material and periodicals largely available digitally, much of the collection could be located on the lower level and still retain its browsability. Here, it is paired with quiet study environments that benefit from the sound absorbing and insular environment of the collection.
With more space available for new programmatic elements, the Learning Commons combines an array of resources for campus-wide use, including state-of-the-art classrooms, a makerspace, and dedicated areas for assistance with research, technology, and reading and writing. Technology-rich group study rooms provide space for collaboration, screening films, group presentations, one-button studio recording, video conferences, and remote learning. New spaces dedicated to the College’s special collections that were previously spread throughout campus, now bring together the Ramapo College Archives, the American History Textbook Project, the Jane Addams Papers Project, and the Gross Center for Holocaust & Genocide Studies.
As part of meeting the project’s sustainability and budget goals, the original foundation and steel superstructure were retained. To preserve and modernize the historic but failing slate panel exterior, the slate was removed, a new rainscreen wall assembly with increased thermal performance and moisture control constructed, and the slate panels replaced. A series of vertical and horizontal sunshades along the southern exterior protect occupants from direct glare and excessive heat gain while allowing plentiful natural light and extensive views of the surrounding campus.
